Prof. Peter P.C. Haanappel

Dr. Haanappel is Professor of Air and Space Law at the University of Leiden, and he is in charge of the LL.M. and Ph.D. programmes at the International Institute of Air and Space Law at Leiden. He is also Adjunct Professor of Law at McGill University, and a member of the advisory board of Project 2001 Plus at the Institute of Air and Space Law of the University of Cologne.

From 1976 to 1990, Dr. Haanappel was Professor of Law at McGill University. During that period, he was also Associate Dean of the Faculty of Law (1988-90) and Associate Director of the Institute of Air and Space Law (1989-90).

In 1990, he was appointed Director, European Aeropolitical Affairs at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in Geneva. From 1997 to 2000, he was IATA's Director for Government and Industry Affairs, Europe, based in Amsterdam and Brussels. In these capacities he maintained relations between the member airlines of IATA and, amongst others, the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC), the EU institutions and European aeronautical authorities.

Dr. Haanappel has published extensively in air and space law, civil law, comparative law, and juridical linguistics. He graduated in Law from the Free University of Amsterdam (1972) and obtained a D.E.S. degree from the Faculté internationale pour l'enseignement du droit comparé in Strasbourg. He obtained an LL.M. (1974) and D.C.L. (1976) from McGill University.
